DENIM DENIM DENIM

Denim is probably one of the most important inventions of all time. You can literally wear it anywhere and with anything. I am 99% sure that you own at least one pair of denim skinny jeans, a denim jacket and a denim button-down shirt. Denim is such a timeless and effortless go-to staple piece. Over the years, denim has come to represent much more than their initial androgynous utilitarian purpose.  Denim is constantly evolving to meet our lifestyle needs. The new unconstructed and spontaneous rules for wearing denim are one of my favourite trends of 2016. The days of only wearing denim as skinny jeans, are long gone. Denim has so many micro trends, thanks to its versatility factors. All it takes is some creativity to keep looking trendy.

Do you remember the time when jeans were cut with a ridiculously low rise, revealing every girl’s underwear preference? Those days required a constant lower-back check, I used to live in constant fear of flashing the public and falling out of my pants. Luckily, high wasted mom jeans have re-emerged from the ‘90s.  What are mom jeans? The better question is: What was the mom jean? Twenty years ago, they were fashionable denim in a light blue wash, with a waistband near the natural waist and made from 100% cotton. They began disappearing from stores in the late ‘90s when the Britney Spears low-rise era commenced. Love it or hate it, mom jeans are very comfortable and also quite practical.

They say to never throw away a piece once the trend has run its course, because, eventually it will come back. Such is the case with patchwork denim and iron on badges. Once popular in the ’70s and ‘80s, this trend is making a reappearance. Consider the unexpected. This trend won’t burn a hole in your pocket, because it allows you to be creative. Do it yourself. Refashion dull and boring jeans by adding patchwork detail. Use patches of fabric or cut out chucks of old denim and stich them to your jeans for a new trendy look. Spice up an old denim jacket with colourful iron on embellishments.

One of the most daring trends is denim on denim. In my opinion, this is one of the most risky trends of all time. There’s a fine line between looking completely trend forward and simply looking like a road worker. But, when done right this trend can be one for the books. If you are one of those risk takers who consider trying out this trend, remember, the key is to mix your denim colour shades and play around with different textures. Add different elements to emphasise the look. Such as fraying detail, patchwork, embellishments, etc.

The baggy jean, or better known as the boyfriend jean. This denim is one of those trends that will re-emerge every few years and for a good reason. They’re unbelievably comfortable and can also be flattering as long as you balance out the proportions. They are the essential sweat pants of the denim world. But, you can wear them with anything. Although many people prefer to pair them with sneakers, you can also opt to pair them with some elegant heels for a dressed up look.

Denim trends come and go so quickly that it's almost exhausting to keep up with them, but if there's one type of jean that's become a modern classic, it's the artfully pair. The raw hem jeans trend has been very popular this year. Every premium denim brand as well as the high street alternatives now features raw hems in a lot of their jeans that they release. For those of you who want to attempt the trend yourself and don’t want pay a pricey fee for a new pair of raw hem jeans, try to do it yourself.
